OUR MISSION

It’s our mission to support, resource, and raise awareness about grassroots organizations working to better their communities, led primarily by women and women of color and focused on reproductive rights, immigration rights, food support, and access to hygiene, mental health and healthcare, legal aid, and more, while building community.

HOW WE SERVE

We do this by hosting events, distributing information, educating ourselves, fundraising, organizing donation drives, spotlighting organizations, donating time, and offering easy opportunities for people to discover, support, and get involved with causes aligned with W.O.M.’s mission. We look for similarly scaled organizations to support in order to maximize the effect of our fundraising, knowing that making substantial change in local communities can provide immediate relief while helping to shift the culture at large.

WHO WE ARE

W.O.M. IS an informal community group based in Northeast Los Angeles. We are intersectionally and inclusively feminist, antiracist, anti-classist, anti-ableist, anti-capitalist, and abolitionist. Our feminism includes and prioritizes women of color, trans women, queer and non-binary people, unhoused and formerly or currently incarcerated communities, and other underrepresented groups. We are committed to constantly learning and evolving our feminism to create a more equitable experience. We are working to challenge the white-cis-het patriarchy, while also acknowledging our place of privilege in it, as well as the capitalist system in which it exists.

OUR HISTORY

W.O.M. was formed as a collective in the wake of the 2016 election by a small group of long-term friends looking to channel our frustration and disempowerment into meaningful action and tangible change. We are  not experienced political organizers, but we know how to throw a party, and as a group of women in creative fields, we decided to put our talents to work. Taking inspiration from grassroots women’s organizations of the past and driven by intersectional feminism, we began hosting events and raising money, redistributing resources into the hands of women, primarily women of color, who are  already doing the work their communities need most. We have continued to pool our resources and build our own community and connections, supporting each other in the process while lifting others up. We hope W.O.M. inspires others to utilize the tools, talents, skills, and spaces they have to integrate public service into all aspects of work and play. Turns out something as simple as bingo night or a bake sale can take on social change.
